An Introduction to Psychoanalysis – Class 4: Otto Rank, Sándor Ferenczi, Family Romances, Little Hans & the Rat Man

With Dr. Vanessa Sinclair

Huge thanks to everyone who came out last night! It was great to see all of you, and what a fantastic discussion at the end. Thank you all for bringing your thoughts, comments, questions, and insights. Let’s continue the discussion in the Discord! (LINK BELOW)

Here is the recording of the 4th class of An Introduction to Psychoanalysis.

In this class, we began with a brief overview of the life and work of Otto Rank. We reviewed Freud’s “Family Romances” essay, which was originally included in a collection edited by Rank from 1909. We also highlighted a contemporary trans-affirming perspective that takes Freud’s “Family Romances” as a starting point. I highly recommend watching our event with M.E. O’Brien from last year “Trans Childhoods and the Family Romance” and reading her chapter of the same title from The Queerness of Psychoanalysis: From Freud and Lacan to Laplanche and Beyond (Routledge, 2025), of which you may find a PDF in the Google Drive. We then moved to a review of the life and work of Sándor Ferenczi, as well as Freud’s case studies, Little Hans and the Rat Man, both published in 1909.

Please be in touch if you’re interested in joining a monthly peer supervision group! We’re planning to begin mid-March.
