The Queerness of Psychoanalysis: Tiresias as Patron Saint of Psychoanalysis
Join me in welcoming philosopher Simone Atenea Medina Polo for a thought-provoking discussion as we explore the myth of Tiresias, the blind prophet whose story serves as a powerful symbol for the complexities of human identity and desire.
Simone Atenea will present and expand upon her chapter from The Queerness of Psychoanalysis: From Freud and Lacan to Laplanche and Beyond (Routledge, 2025). Her chapter and the ZOOM LINK for the event can be found HERE.
We will be meeting online for 2 hours beginning at 9AM Vancouver/ 12PM noon NYC/ 5PM London/ 18:00 Stockholm/ 19:00 Beirut.
All paid subscribers to RU Center for Psychoanalysis will automatically receive the ZOOM LINK and recording of the event. You may also register by sending €5 ($6.50] to RU Center HERE. Proceeds raised go towards paying our presenter(s).
The blind prophet was described as the patron saint of psychoanalysis by Jacques Lacan and has recently been taken up as a figure of psychoanalytic trans-formation by Patricia Gherovici, Bracha L. Ettinger, Sheila L. Cavanagh, and Geneviève Morel, among other theorists and practitioners. In response, Tiresias has been proposed as the sinthome of psychoanalysis, insofar as he represents a creative strategy for the reinvigoration of psychoanalysis as it comes to terms with this restless element and reembodies or trans-forms itself.
This event is a must-attend for anyone interested in the rich history of psychoanalysis and its connections to queer theory. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to engage with groundbreaking ideas and connect with like-minded individuals. Register now to secure your spot!
This is the third event in The Queerness of Psychoanalysis series hosted by Vanessa Sinclair and RU Center for Psychoanalysis! The first two events are archived HERE.
Simone Atenea Medina Polo is a philosopher and interdisciplinary artist based out of amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). As a musician, Atenea has released multiple music albums as pseudo-antigone including her album Melancholic Melodrama (out August 15th) which tells a quasi-fiction of the subjective destitution of an insecure artist who severed her own humanity in a Faustian bargain to become TMZ-level pop star disaster. Academically, Atenea has published articles and book chapters in philosophy, psychoanalysis, and Marxism with collaborators and editors such as Nicol A. Barria-Asenjo, Slavoj Žižek, Julie Reshe, Vanessa Sinclair, Todd McGowan, and Duane Rousselle.
